Main Task- Location Research

We chose to use the setting of a forest/wooded area instead of a public setting so the disappearance seems more sinister. We found the following articles most interesting and helped us to confirm and explain why this is the scary setting for a Thriller opening:

This article describes the forest/wooded setting being at the heart of great books and films. Whether it is from innocent fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, to the paranormal home of evil in films such as The Blair Witch Project, the forest is full of hidden dangers and horrifying creatures that lurk in the darkness.

“Some woods and forests have a rich history indeed. Battle fields, buried treasures, Native burial grounds, crimes and murders, hangings, suicides, cult sacrifices.” The historical aspect of this setting really caught our attention.

The woods were also the setting for the game, Slender: The Eight Pages. The player's objective is to collect eight pages located in various areas of the forest while avoiding the Slender Man. The Slender Man is depicted as resembling a thin, unnaturally tall man with a blank and usually featureless face, and wearing a black suit. The Slender Man is commonly said to stalk, abduct, or traumatize people, particularly children.

“Beneath the trees where nobody sees they’ll hide and seek as long as they please.” As innocent as this childhood song may seem, when put into a foreboding atmosphere, this line really gives off a disturbing image. It creates the idea that things are going on beyond what you can see under the coverage of the trees and foliage.

As location is one of the most important aspects of a Thriller, we allowed our research to shape and mould the themes and story of our own opening:

10 year old Molly and her mother take their dog for a walk one afternoon. In a blink of an eye, Molly disappears leaving nothing behind but her teddy lying in the mud. Her mother races into the woods in search of her missing child and as the dark seeps in, she begins to run out of time.
